One of the many wonderful aspects of living in Yellow Springs is the presence of community music. The Yellow Springs Youth Orchestra Association (YSYOA) has been providing support for music opportunities in the village since 1965.
The Youth Orchestra Program was founded by cellist Shirley Mullins and the late violinist Mary Schumacher. Although it originally centered on school-aged children, today the focus has broadened to include the larger community, providing venues for people of all ages to share and enjoy music together.
YSYOA is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who set policy for the organization. The Board meets periodically to discuss and plan the the Association's activities.
Here is a sampling of the activities and programs the Yellow Springs Youth Orchestra Association provides for our community:
- The Yellow Springs Summer Music Camp (formerly the Summer Strings Program), currently a two-week day camp, offers full orchestra, jazz combo, vocal and chamber music ensembles, master classes, music theory, private lessons, conducting and more
- Inter-generational performances
- Yellow Springs Strings, a chamber orchestra for adults, some who had not played in many years before joining
- Purchasing and refurbishing instruments
- Purchasing sheet music
- Music Scholarships
